There are a number of important biogeochemicals found in soils, but let's focus on two in particular: Nitrogen and Potassium.

Nitrogen plays a key role in the process of photosynthesis - the conversion of food crops to starch, which is a source of energy for plants. Soils with a high percentage of clay are alkaline in nature. Therefore, they are better for maintaining the ph within the ground water. Clay soils are also characterized by fine to medium-chain amino acids. Clay soils can be further categorized into coarse and soft clay soils.

The physical method involves using instruments that are sensitive to changes in soil texture, such as mineral surveyors' gauges and tester sprays. Chemical method is performed using laboratory equipment and chemicals that are absorbed by the soil. One should be aware that different types of chemicals have different effects on the different types of soils.

The primary soils include sand and silt and clay. The secondary soils include rock, granite, and limestone and are made up of colloidal or fine-grained sand or silt.

The difference in texture can be attributed to the porosity or thickness of the sand or silt. The thickness of a material usually refers to its weight. Silt is often lighter than sand or clay and has a fine grain. Clay, on the other hand, is much heavier than sand but fine-grained. Rock is somewhere in between.

The greater the porosity, the more permeable the soil is. Soils with greater porosity allow water and other liquids to penetrate quickly into the ground. Thus, more moisture is allowed to percolate into the soil. On the other hand, clay soils tend to be less permeable. Clay is much heavier than sand and has a finer grain, so it retains more moisture.

Soil particle size also affects the permeability of the soil. Small particles of sand or silt are easily penetrated. As the size of the particle increases, however, the permeability decreases. Soils with larger particles of clay, such as clay taken from deep within the earth, are better able to retain moisture, resulting in less drought and a healthier lawn. So what is soil texture then?

The final component of the soil texture is the amount of silt or clay content. Clay soils have a finer texture than most other soils. Clay particles are much heavier than sand and they contain larger amounts of oxygen and magnesium. Clay also contains lots of iron and sodium.
